Introducing Bruno; a fashion statement bucket hat that will add pizzazz and creative fashion fun to your wardrobe.

Bruno is an easy to sew pattern. It has three pattern pieces that are cut out of your main fabric and lining fabric. The main fabric pieces are backed with fusible interfacing to give it more structure and shape.

For my Bruno bucket hat I chose to use scuba/neoprene fabric from Minerva Fabrics. Scuba fabric is a term commonly used to refer to Neoprene which is a synthetic textile. It was originally created in the 1930's as a substitute for rubber. While Neoprene might be a dream come true for scuba divers due to its waterproof nature it does have to be used thoughtfully in the fashion world. For more information about scuba and how I used it to sew the extra large tote from Fibre Mood click here.

I wanted to add detail to the scuba that would add interest and texture so I quilted a cross-hatch pattern on the fabric before cutting out the pattern pieces.

To make the fabric easy to manipulate I cut out pieces of fabric that were just a bit bigger than the pattern pieces and quilted it. This allowed me to manipulate how the cross hatching would be placed and I enjoyed playing with the angles.

To select your proper hat size, measure the circumference of your head and make the size that best matches the finished sizes of the pattern. You will start by sewing the side pieces together, then pinning it to the circular top piece. To create the lining you will follow these same steps. This is a good time to try the hat on to make sure that the fit works for you.

Next you will pin the brim pieces together then sew them together to create a upper and lower brim piece. The pattern leaves part of the side seam open so that once you have sewn it together you can turn the hat right side out then simply sew the small seam opening shut.

I liked this approach to completing the hat. It created a nicely finished hat.

Bruno will definitely be a useful, quick to sew pattern. You will be able to design many different versions from a variety of woven fabrics for multiple seasons. My scuba Bruno will help to repel water for rainy days which will work well in the fall/winter season.

Bruno is a great scrap busting pattern and you can have so much fun combing fabrics and mix and matching patterns.

After all.... There is Sew Much To Design,

Happy Bruno Bucket Hat Sewing,
