Today we are, in fact, doing another refashion or garment renovation as I like to call it. Refashioning is so much fun and in today’s tutorial, I will show you how I took a boring blouse and transformed it into a cute corset cover.

Tools and materials:

  • Blouse
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Seam binding
DIY corset cover

It’s true that when it comes to refashioning projects, I make up a lot as I go along, but it’s still important to have a plan. For this project, I planned that I would create a sort of casing waistline that would be gathered.

Try on the blouse

I then tried on the blouse so that I could get all the measurements perfect. Once I had a plan in mind, I got to work!

Mark the blouse

Using pins, I marked the band at the bottom of the blouse and I also marked the waistline.

Cut across

Cut the blouse

I went ahead and cut along the measurement under the bust adding in seam allowance.

Basic corset cover

I also cut down my band, adding seam allowance.

Take in the sides

Take in the sides

I decided that I wanted to take in the sides a little. I first sewed a basting stitch and then tried the shirt on to make sure it fit well before actually taking it in.

How to make a corset cover

Make a casing

The corset cover was looking really nice and it was time to work on the casing. I wanted to use some bias binding but the tapes I had were either too wide or too thin. I thought about making my own but I realized I had enough plain fabric from the piece I cut off of the blouse.

Cut the casing

First, I had to cut the plain fabric for the casing.

Make two casing pieces

From the fabric, I had to create two pieces, one circular and one open, to attach to the bodice.

Attach the underside

I attached the underside first.

Topstitch the top layer

I then topstitched on the top layer of the casing, leaving a little opening at the center front.

Sew a corset cover

Add finishing touches

I decided to use this white seam binding to thread through the casing and tie at the front.

Easy corset cover

Lastly, I switched out the buttons for higher quality, white buttons. I really believe that it’s the little details that make all the difference!

Make changes

After trying it on, I found it to be a little too blouse-like, so I shortened it and took it in at the sides a bit to get the perfect corset cover.

I really love this corset cover! I think I’ll make one in every color! Share your thoughts on this refashion project in the comments below!
