Make Your Own Hand Stamped Clothing Labels

Materials and Supplies Needed

• Clear Stamps (Kindness on Purpose – Laura Kelly for Therm-O-Web)
• Stamping Blocks
• StazOn Black Stamp Pad
• Pinking Sheers
• Fabric Pieces Cut to Size For Labels or Patches (100% Cotton Canvas)
• HeatnBond from Therm-O-Web
• Iron

Directions

Start with CLEAN and ironed fabric. 100% cotton canvas works great. You can try stamping on other fabrics too. I will show you a few additional suggestions later in this post. BUT – for this project we are using a cotton canvas (upcycled from a cut tote bag).

Cut a piece of fabric just a tiny bit larger than a piece of HeatnBond.

Iron the bumpy side of the Heat and Bond to the fabric following the directions in the packaging.

Step Two

Position the stamps of choice on a stamp block. Because the stamp block is clear, you can see exactly how it going to lay out on the fabric before you ever even ink it.

Step Three

Ink the stamps with the StazOn stamp pad. I recommend doing this by leaving the stamp flat on your work table and patting the ink down on top of the stamp surface. This seems to get a better result and create less of an inky residue upon completion.

Step Four

Press the stamp design down firmly on the fabric surface. Cover the surface with stamped designs, leaving room to cut them apart.

Step Five

Cut the designs apart. I used pinking shears but you could use whatever edge you like best, even a straight cut.

Step Six

To attach the stamped piece to a clothing item. peel off the covering on the other side of the HeatnBond then iron it to the surface wherever you want it – adhesive side down. Here are a few that I did, starting with the I Love You on one of my husband’s show shirts. I want to put hand stamped clothing labels in all of his shirts!

Hand Stamping on other Fabrics

I tried the stamping process on denim and a white cotton. They both worked great which gives me lots more inspiration to do this again. I even ordered something to test making colored pencils on fabric permanent so stay tuned.

How cute is this label (maybe more of a patch really) on this hand stitched kitchen towel. I LOVE it. I want to make hand stamped clothing labels now for everything.
