WOW! Thrift a Man's Vest and Do That

Do you have a pile of thrifted clothes that you’ve done nothing with? Me too! I decided to start turning some of them into things I will actually wear, with quick projects like this one.

I started with a tailored man’s vest. Let’s see what I did with it!

Tools and materials:

  • Man’s tailored vest
  • Fabric marker
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine

1. Before

This is a five-button lined vest that is too big for me to wear as it is, but not hugely oversized.

2. Cross-over

I used a dress form for this, but you can do this on your own body or with a friend’s help.

Lift the armhole on the buttonhole side over your head onto the other shoulder.

Repeat with the other side.

Fasten the top two buttons.

3. Cut and sew

Mark where the second side needs trimming back.

I also needed to lift both fronts at the shoulder seams.

Cut away the excess fabric and restitch the front and shoulders.

4. Reverse

To wear, pass the armhole on the buttoned side over your head first, then the buttonhole side.

Fasten the top two buttons.

The advantage of a man’s vest is that the armholes are cut very deep and so will easily fit diagonally across your shoulders.

It takes very little adjustment to turn it into a smart halter top that works for day and evening wear.
