If you're looking for a quick and easy sewing project that's perfect for beginners, then my latest tutorial on how to sew a bralette DIY top is just what you need.

You can make it using fabric scraps, so it's not only budget-friendly, but sustainable too.

Plus, I'm giving away a free printable PDF bralette sewing pattern that comes in all sizes.

I've included detailed instructions for every step of the process. So what are you waiting for? Let's get sewing!

Tools and materials:

  • Light to medium-weight non-stretch fabric for outer and lining
  • Free printable PDF pattern
  • Paper for printing
  • Knitting needle
  • Fabric marker
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Iron
Preparing pattern

1. Prepare the pattern

Print out the pattern and redraw it using tracing paper, adding a half inch (1 cm) seam allowance.

The back pieces print over two sheets of paper, so tape the pages together before you start tracing.

Cutting the fabric

2. Cut the fabric

Fold your fabric in half. Pin the paper pattern to your fabric as shown and cut it out.

You need to cut each piece, except for the shoulder straps, from both the outer and lining fabrics. The shoulder straps are cut from the lining only.

Sewing the straps

3. Sew the straps

Fold the strap in half widthways with the right sides together and sew the long and one short edge closed, stitching the short edge into a curve.

Trim the excess from the short edge and push it inside the strap with a knitting needle or similar item, to turn the strap right side out.

Repeat for the second strap and press both flat.

Sewing the bra cups

4. Sew the bra cups

Pin and sew one center and one side outer cup together along the curved edges. Press the seam flat.

Repeat for the second outer cup and both lining cups.

Sewing the bra cups

With the right sides facing, place the outer and lining cups together.

Place the open end of the strap at the top point of the cup and mark its position on the cup.

Sewing the bra cups

Insert the strap between the two layers and pin and sew them in place along the side edges.

Sewing the bra cups

Cut off the point of the cup just above the mark. Snip into the side seam allowances, turn the cups right side out and press them.

Top stitch the seams close to the edge.

Sewing the bands

5. Sew the bands

Fold the front band in half lengthways and mark the center.

With the right sides facing, pin and sew the front band to the two back bands along the short sides. Press the seams flat.

Repeat for the lining bands.

Sewing the bands

With the right sides together, pin the bra cups to the top edge of the outer band, so the inside edges of the cups meet at the center point of the band.

Sewing the bands

Place the lining band on top, matching the centers of the bands.

Pin the layers together around the perimeter of the bands, tucking the straps and upper part of the cups inside.

Sew in place, leaving a 2 inch (5 cm) opening at the center front.

Sewing the bands

Snip the curves and push the two ends through the opening to turn the top right side out.

Press well and sew the opening closed.

Top stitch around the edges of the band.
