How to Sew a Statement Christmas Party Top

It’s starting to feel pretty festive around here! In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to create this romantic, off-shoulder statement top that’s perfect for your upcoming Christmas party.
What are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Soft, tulle fabric in 3 colors
- Sewing machine
- Stretchy lining fabric
- Fabric scissors
- Thin elastic thread
1. Prepare your fabric
Cut a long strip of tulle fabric that is 7” in height.
2. Gather in the middle
Sew a straight line down the middle of the tulle with a gathering sewing tool.
3. Make two more gathered tulle pieces
Repeat twice more on your other colored tulle fabrics.
4. Cut fabric for the inner part of the top
To create a shirred texture for the base of your crop top, use a stretchy and lightweight fabric.
Cut out a large rectangle to match your torso size. Sew a seam along all edges.
5. Make top and bottom seam
Insert thin, elastic thread into a bobbin and sew the top and bottom seams.
6. Make the lines of the shirred texture
To make the lines, go down 1 cm (0.39”) from the top and for the other lines, maintain 1 cm between them.
7. Attach tulle pieces to the shirred base
Stitch the tulle onto the base of the crop top.
Mix the colored tulle randomly to create a hologram effect. Attach each piece and cut off the excess.
You should end up with a fluffy piece like this:
8. Close the crop top
After the strip is completely covered in tulle, join the ends together and hem it.
Here’s a peek at the inside before the fabric becomes a top.
Here is the final result:
