DIY Unicorn Sugar Scrub

My daughter and I love unicorns, so you'll see a lot of unicorn themed DIYs here. She wanted a new sugar scrub, so we made a unicorn body scrub.

We've made several types of sugar scrubs, but we decided to make a basic DIY sugar scrub this time. This presentation is all in the layers of colors.

Although I made a unicorn body scrub DIY recipe, you can change the colors for more themes. This would be cute in purple and green for a mermaid body scrub or just use your favorite colors.

Do Sugar Scrubs Actually Exfoliate?

Yes, a DIY sugar scrub does actually exfoliate your skin! The sugar is mildly abrasive, so it sloughs of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin.

Getting these dead skin cells off helps your skin feel better and look better.

Sugar scrubs also get into you pores to loosen and remove dead skin cells and dirt. This also helps your skin look better.

You can also use salt to make a unicorn body scrub DIY. Learn about sugar scrub vs salt scrub to see which one is better for your skin.

Will Food Coloring in Sugar Scrubs Stain Skin?

Food coloring will stain your skin and tub if used undiluted. However, it's diluted enough in a DIY sugar scrub so it shouldn't stain.

With that said, since this is a layered unicorn sugar scrub, food coloring will seep out into the other layers.

I recommend using mica powder for better results.

Where Should You Not Use Sugar Scrubs?

You can use a unicorn sugar scrub on most of your body. However, do not use it on your face or on sensitive parts of your body.

The sugar is too abrasive for facial skin.

Also avoid using a DIY sugar scrub on broken skin or irritated skin. Do not use on damaged skin like from a sunburn.

Are Sugar Scrubs Better Before or After Body Wash?

Some people like to use a unicorn body scrub before washing, and other prefer to use it after washing. For best results, I like to use a body scrub after washing.

Washing helps remove dirt and oil, which helps the scrub work better.

Do You Rinse Off a Sugar Scrub?

Yes, you should rinse off after using this DIY unicorn sugar scrub. The sugar will make your skin feel sticky if you don't rinse.

How Many Times a Week Should You Use a Sugar Scrub?

You can use a DIY unicorn sugar scrub once or twice a week. Using it more often can irritate your skin and may even disrupt the top layer of your skin and make it dry.

What Oil is Best for Sugar Scrub?

I used sweet almond oil to make my DIY unicorn sugar scrub because it's an excellent all purpose carrier oil. It's also inexpensive.

Carrier oils have different benefits for your skin, and you can learn about carrier oils and their benefits here.

Here are more carrier oils you can try:

  • Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so it will make this scrub firmer. Coconut oil is moisturizing and has vitamins A and E for your skin.
  • Grapeseed oil is a light oil, so it soaks in quickly. It won't leave your skin as oily as other oils.
  • Argan oil is high in vitamin E for antiaging. It won't clog pores, so it's good for acne prone skin.
  • Avocado oil is a rich oil that's very moisturizing. It can cause breakouts for those with acne prone skin. You can mix it with another oil if it's too heavy.

I recommend getting carrier oils from Crafty Bubbles, Mountain Rose Herbs, or HB Oils.

Essential Oils for Unicorn Sugar Scrub

Crafty Bubbles has a Unicorn Kisses blend of essential oils and natural fragrance oils that smells amazing. It's fruity and fun, and I love it for DIY bath and body.

You can also use one of these fun essential oil blends the smell like candy if you want to use essential oils.

If you want natural scents but find essential oils too limiting, try Nature's Oils for natural fragrance oils.

Simply Earth also has a Unicorn blend and a fun blend called Lava that I really love.

What is the Shelf Life of Homemade Sugar Scrub?

Since this unicorn sugar scrub is oil based and doesn't have water, you don't need a preservative. However, be careful not to introduce water into it.

If you use it in the shower and risk getting water in it, then I recommend using a preservative. I recommend Optiphen or Phenonip. They both have different percentages, so use them according to the manufacturer's directions.

Otherwise, this DIY sugar scrub will last about 3 months.

Unicorn Body Scrub Ingredients

You will need the following to make an 8 ounce scrub:

Combine the sugar and sweet almond oil in a small bowl and stir well. Add the fragrance oil or essential oil and stir.

Divide the mixture between three bowls. Add lavender mica to one bowl and pink mica to another bowl. Stir well.
