Here, I’m going to show you how to create an upside down braid with a messy bun finish.

If you’re on the lookout for something a bit different, you’ll love this. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Hair elastics
  • Hair tie
Braiding hair upside down

1. Braid hair upside down

Tip your hair upside down and start braiding your hair.

Tying off bottom

2. Tie off bottom

Proceed to tie off the bottom of your braid.

You don’t want to incorporate all of the hair into the braid, you want to leave a section of hair down at the front.

Tying hair into bun

3. Tie hair into bun

Proceed to scrape all of your hair into a ponytail and tie it with a hair tie.

Don’t pull your hair all the way through at the end, though, as we want to create a bun.

Widening the bun

4. Widen the bun

Pull on the bun to give it a loose and messy look.

Proceed to pull out small sections of hair at the front on either side of your head to frame your face.

Separating hair

5. Separate hair at back

Separate the hair at the back into two sections.

Tying hair at front

6. Tie hair at front

Bring the hair round to the front and tie the bottom with an elastic.

Twisting hair around bun

7. Twist hair around bun

Separate the hair you’ve tied to create a circle, then twist that circle and put it over the bun.

Here is the finished look. I love the braid going up the back of my head from the bottom, with the gorgeous messy bun sitting at the top of my head.

This hairstyle is quite different and unique and a really great option if you’re looking for a change.
