I found this long flowy skirt at a thrift store and got it because I loved the ruffled design along the bottom of the skirt. But the skirt was far too big for me and also stained, so let’s just say I wasn’t going to be wearing it as is. I’d recently seen a super cute mini skirt and I was so ready to turn this long skirt into a version of that adorable mini. In this tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how I made that happen. Determine how much you’re going to remove

Look at your skirt and decide how much of it you actually want in the final product. I had to get rid of the stains on it and a lot of the length, so I pretty much just kept the bottom ruffles and the top part of the waist.

Cut down your thrift skirt
Cut off the bottom

Lay your skirt down on a flat surface (if you watch my videos, you know I spend a lot of time on the floor) and cut off the bottom of the skirt.

Cut off the waist

Now cut off however much of the waist you want to keep.

Line up your skirt pieces
Line up your pieces

Take both the pieces you’re going to be using and lie them down one on top of the other. The bottom piece will naturally be much longer, so we need to get the length of the bottom piece to match that of the top piece.

Baste your skirt
Baste the top of the bottom piece

You’re going to sew all the way around the top and you’re going to pull the ends of your string which will cause it to ruffle into itself. You can pull the string until the length matches the other piece.

Sew together both pieces

Next, you’re going to line up both pieces and sew the basted seam on top of the waist. There’s no need to worry about the raw edges, they’ll fade into the ruffled look. If you find that the waist piece is now smaller than the bottom piece, you can baste that as well before connecting them.
