DIY bleached jean jacket
Bleach the jacket

To get started on this modern, refashioned jacket, I placed the jacket in a bucket of water mixed with a liter of bleach. I made sure to move the jacket around in the bucket so that all the denim was exposed to the bleach. I bleached the jacket for about 30 minutes, rinsed it with water, and then washed it. Make sure to put it in an empty washing machine so that you don’t ruin your other clothes!

Place the grommets
Add grommets

I was so excited about my new light denim jacket and couldn’t wait to continue working on it. I turned the jacket over and placed the grommets above and below the seam. Once I was happy with their placement, I pressed down hard to make a mark on the denim.

Cut holes

To insert the grommet into the jacket, I cut out a small circle on the marking I had made earlier. I was careful not to cut the hole too big. You can use a fabric punch for this step but scissors work just as well. Once my circle was cut to the right size, I inserted the grommet.

I loved the grommets so much that I decided to add more to the sleeves by repeating the same process.

Paint the jacket

I turned my jacket over and used my white fabric paint, to paint thick, rough circles on the front. I chose white because I love it against the denim but feel free to choose any color fabric paint!

Splatter the paint

Once I had painted all the circles, I decided to splatter some fabric paint over the front of the jacket to give it a gorgeous abstract finish. I then decided to add more painted circles to the sleeves of the jacket.

Paint the buttons

Once I had the desired look, I added paint to the buttons of the jacket and when it had dried a little, I ironed from the back to help set the paint.

Paint the back

I decided to add a few more finishing touches onto the back of my jacket using the fabric paint. I added more circles and paint splats but feel free to get creative with your fabric paint and create your own unique design.
