Before I could get started on putting together this amazing skirt I had to make sure I had traced all the pattern pieces onto my fabric and cut out all the pieces I would need!

With all the pieces cut out and at the ready I started working with the front waistband piece and pressed the interfacing onto it.

Finish all the edges

Next, I wanted to make sure my skirt would have the perfect finish and look professional so I finished all the raw edges on the front and back of the skirt, the front and back waistband as well as the pockets.

Add pockets
Add pockets

Who doesn’t love pockets? I was so excited to add this detail to my skirt! I marked 2 inches from the top of the skirt and sewed in my pockets leaving half an inch for seam allowance.

With my pockets safely attached, I moved on to sewing the skirt together. I placed the top piece of the skirt over the bottom piece, right sides together and I sewed the side seams leaving half an inch for seam allowance.

Gather the fabric
Gather the front

To get the perfect look for my tartan skirt, I gathered the front of the skirt. I made sure I gathered it so that the width was about half of my waist circumference measurement.

Pin the waistband
Work on the waistband

With the gathering on my skirt ready, I moved on to working with the waistbands. I matched up the sides of my front and back waistbands, right sides together, and pinned them in place. I hopped on over to my sewing machine and sewed them together, creating one big waistband for my new skirt.

Pin onto the skirt

I then placed my waistband on the top of my skirt, right sides facing. I lined up the seams of the waistband with the seams of the skirt and pinned them in place.

Sew on the waistband

I moved back to my sewing machine to sew on the waistband. The waistband adds so much to the style of the new skirt! I couldn’t wait to see it all come together!

Add elastic

In this next step, I created a channel for my elastic in the back of the waistband. I started by folding the back of the waistband in half and then I slightly overlapped the folded seam allowance edge and pinned it to the right side of the back waistband. I made sure to also stitch on the right side, checking to see if I was catching the edge on the underside.

Pull elastic through

I put a safety pin on one end of the elastic and pulled it through the back waistband. I made sure to secure the ends of the elastic with pins. I sewed over the ends that I had pinned a few times to make sure the elastic wouldn't budge!

Secure the elastic

I then sewed across the elastic at different points so that it would stay in place and not twist or turn while I was wearing the skirt or in the wash.

Pin the front waistline
Sew the front waistline down

Lastly, I needed to work on finishing my front waistline! I repeated the folding and sewing that I had previously done on the back and pinned it in place.

For my last bit of sewing before the big reveal, I sewed along the seam of the front waistband making sure everything was in place.
