Raise your hand if you don’t like a beautiful and comfortable pair of pants. That’s right, no one! I was looking for the perfect summer pants and I ended up making them myself. I loved this project so much, I just had to make two pairs. It was fun to do, and so easy, and took a surprisingly short amount of time. Follow this tutorial to see how I made them.

Tools and materials:

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pinking scissors
  • Serger
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern
  • Sewing pins
Summer pants
Trace your pattern

I already had the pattern I wanted, so all I had to do was to copy it onto the fabric. First I pinned it in place, then I traced around the pattern, finally cutting the fabric in the shapes I needed.

Sew darts

Once I had my patterns cut out, I was able to pin the darts of the back pieces and sew them in place by machine.

Sew the back pieces

The next thing I did was to take the two back pieces and pin them together. Then I took them to my sewing machine and sewed them where I had pinned them. I repeated the process for the front pieces, then cleaned all the edges using my serger.

I then pinned the front piece on the back piece with the right sides facing each other. I sewed them together along the under leg seam and cut the excess fabric with my serger.

Make the belt piece

For the lining of the belt piece, I chose a stiff white fabric. I then traced the shape of the belt on the lining and pinned it to the fabric. I sewed it together, cut the excess fabric with pinking scissors, then flipped it back on the right side. Next, I pinned the belt in place and ironed it carefully.

Add the belt

I basted the belt by hand and cut off the excess fabric. Then I pinned the belt onto the pants, right sides facing each other, and sewed them together by machine. Using a serger, I cut off the excess fabric.

Add the zipper

My next step was to add the zipper on the left side. I basted each side by hand and did it so that it stopped 2 cm from the top, where I would be hand sewing a hook-and-eye closure. I then sewed the zipper in place with my special foot.

Hem the ends

The last thing I needed to do was to hem my new pants. I cut the edges to my desired length and folded the hem over twice, and topstitched it by machine.

That was all it took for me to make these gorgeous pants! As you can see, I loved this project so much that I made it twice, using different patterned fabrics. Each pair works with a different look and I love the fact that this is a project that can be customized to your style and personality. It was easy to do, didn’t take too long, and I can’t get over how cute and comfortable these pants are. So tell me in the comments—which pair do you like better?
