This onesie will keep you so comfy and cozy, you’ll never want to take it off! Follow my simple and easy step-by-step guide and learn the ins and outs of how I made this totally adorable onesie.

Family onesies

Tools and materials:

  • Zipper
  • Soft fleece/polar fleece
  • Pants
  • Shirt
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Christmas onesies
Make a pattern

Place the fleece fabric down, folded, right sides together. Then lay your pants and shirt on the fabric with a slight overlap between the pants and shirt. My overlap was about 3 inches.

Cut the fabric

Then cut around your clothes adding a seam allowance of 2-inches. Once you have your fabric cut out, use one of the pieces as a pattern to cut two more pieces.

Pin the side
Sew the back piece

Next, place two pieces, right sides together and pin from the crotch upwards. You can then sew along your pinned side using a zig-zag stitch. This will be your back piece for this super-cute onesie.

Cut the neckline

Using scissors, cut a curved shape to define the neckline for the front pieces.

Add a Zipper

It’s time to add the zipper to this gorgeous fleece fabric. Pin one side of the zipper onto the front piece of fabric, right sides together. Then sew it on using a straight stitch. Make sure to also topstitch up to the end of the zipper for a perfect finish. Do the same with the second front piece so that the fabric pieces are connected by the zipper.

Sew in the zipper

Next, sew from the bottom of the zipper to the crotch with a zig-zag stitch.

Sew the front and back together

Now you can place the front and back piece, right sides together. Sew the shoulder seams, side seams, and inner leg seams together with a zig-zag stitch.

Trace sleeves
Attach sleeves

Finally, it’s time to get started on the sleeves. Fold your fabric, right sides together, and place the sleeve of your shirt on the fabric. Then cut around the sleeve leaving a 2-inch seam allowance.

Sew the sleeves

Once you have cut out your sleeves, pin and sew them along the open side.

DIY onesies

To attach your sleeves to this awesome onesie, start by turning the sleeves right side out. Slide the sleeve through the armhole and line up the seams. Pin all the way around and then sew in your sleeves with a zig-zag stitch.

Draw the hood
Add a hood

One of the best elements of this onesie is definitely the hoodie! Using the length of the neckline, draw a big capital D.

Cut out the hood

Use the D to cut out a hoodie, adding a ¼ inch for seam allowance.

Pin the hood

Pin and sew the curve using a zig-zag stitch.

Attach the hood to the onesie

Next, to attach this super-cute hoodie, align the back seam of the onesie with the seam of the hoodie so that they are right sides together. Pin all the way around and sew with a zig-zag stitch. Make sure to also backstitch at both ends.

Hem the onesie

Fold the fabric over once around the edges and hem the whole onesie to give it a nice, clean finish.
