Tools and materials:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Bleach
  • Elastic bands
  • Squeeze bottle
Mark the bottle
Make a bleach mix

To make the bleach mix for this amazing DIY, I needed one part bleach and one part water. To make sure I would be accurate, I marked the bottle at its halfway point. I filled my bottle and was ready to get started.

Twist the shirt
Bleach-dye a black tank top

The first piece I was working with was a black tank top. I laid down plastic to keep my surface nice and clean. I decided to do a gorgeous twist pattern from the corner of the top. I started by twisting the corner inwards and worked my way through the top.

Add elastics

Once the whole top was twisted, I wrapped my elastic bands around the fabric.

Twist from the logo

The next piece was this super-cute pink T. I decided to do another swirl pattern on but this time starting from the logo on the T-shirt. I twisted the T-shirt from the logo and once I had the swirl I wanted, I wrapped the shirt in elastic bands.

Roll the top

The next item I bleach-dyed was this black long sleeve shirt. For this piece, I decided to use a rolling technique. I twisted the sleeves and then rolled them into the top.

Put on elastics

I then added two elastics onto each end of the shirt to hold the roll in place. I then added more elastics in the middle.

Twist from the knees
Bleach-dye track pants

The next piece was a pair of track pants. I debated what style to use for these pants and I chose to use the swirl technique starting at the knee area of the pants. Once the fabric was twisted, I added my elastics and couldn't wait to start bleach dyeing.

Pour the bleach mix
Pour on the bleach

It was finally time for the fun part! I put on my rubber gloves and started pouring the bleach over all of my pieces. I turned the fabric over to make sure I added bleach to both sides. I set a timer for 10 minutes so that the bleach wouldn’t damage my clothes.

Rinse with water

I then removed the elastic bands from my clothes and rinsed the bleach off of the fabric.

Put in the wash
Wash the pieces

Once I had rinsed all the pieces, I threw them in the wash. I could not wait to see the end results!
