Ladies know the constant struggle of finding a fashionable way to carry around their belongings. Many of our outfits don’t have pockets, and purses can be cumbersome and annoying to keep track of. The perfect solution? A purse belt! In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the steps of transforming a purse you probably already have lying around into a practical but still fashionable purse belt. So grab that purse and follow along!

Tools and materials:

  • Purse with adjustable strap
  • Scrap fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Ribbon

Cut off the straps

Grab a purse that has an adjustable strap and some scissors, and cut the strap on both sides, keeping the strap whole. Make sure the strap is easily adjustable, as this will become your belt.

Make a loop of fabric

Using some scrap fabric, you’re going to create a loop. Wrap the fabric around the strap in order to determine the size of the loop. Then cut the fabric just past where it’s wrapped around the strap.

Sew your loop

Take that fabric over to your sewing machine and sew the loop closed, right sides together. Make sure that the strap is not in the loop for this part! When you’re done, you’re going to turn the fabric right side out.

Sew the fabric onto the purse

Place the fabric loop on the back of your purse and pin it down, making sure to keep the middle of the loop open for the strap to fit through. Then grab some thread and a thick needle and hand-sew it into place. Sew one straight stitch at the top, and another at the bottom of the fabric. This part won’t be seen when you wear the purse, so don’t worry if your stitch isn’t perfectly straight. When you’re done, trim off the edges.

Tie it on

Grab the strap and thread it through the loop. Then grab some ribbon and put it through the strap rings, and tie it around your waist. You can change up the ribbon according to your outfit, or leave the same one every time! Then just adjust the strap and you are done!

Okay, seriously, how easy was that?! I am obsessed with this purse belt! It’s so much more convenient than carrying a purse, but so much more fashionable than wearing a fanny pack. I’m telling you, if the practicality of a fanny pack and the style of a purse had a love child, this would be it! It looks great with both casual and nicer outfits and can be worn to the side or right in the front of you’d prefer. I wouldn’t advise wearing it in the back, though, for obvious reasons. My favorite part is that I barely had to use any material besides what was already on the purse! I’d love to see your purse belts, so be sure to drop a pic in the comments!
