We all know that a major flaw in the fashion industry is the serious lack of pockets on women’s clothing. It can be so difficult and frustrating to find a cute mini skirt that has pockets. So I decided to give up the search and to just go ahead and make my own instead. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the steps of creating your own mini skirt with pockets from scratch, starting from drafting the pattern. So grab your materials and keep reading.

Tools and materials:

  • Measuring tape
  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Fabric
  • Overlocker
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing pins
  • Scissors
Skirt with pockets

Make the pattern

The first thing you’ll need to do to make the pattern is to make a straight vertical line. Then make a line perpendicular to the vertical line that is ¼ of the measurement of your waist. So if your waist is 24”, the line will be 6” plus a little extra for seam allowance. From that line, go up ½” and make a new line that curves upward. Measure 7” down from the waistline and mark ¼ of your hip measurement. Now mark your desired length and connect it all together so that it looks like half a skirt. Next, you’re going to draw a curved line for the pockets, followed by a bigger curve under the first, and an even bigger and deeper curve under the second. Then draw out the rest of the pocket pieces as shown in the video, making sure to add seam allowance.

Cut out your pattern

Next, you’re going to cut out a waistband that is 4” in width and has a length of your waist measurement plus 2”. Cut one piece of the front panel on the fold and two pieces of the back panel. Add seam allowance to both panels. Now cut out your pattern pieces and then use them to cut out your fabric. Then overlock all the edges.

Add the pocket facings

Take your front pocket bag and lay your front pocket facing onto it, and sew it in place. Then pin the back pocket facing. Now head over to your sewing machine and sew along where you pinned on both pieces.

Attach your pockets

Lay out your front skirt panel and pin the pockets in place, right sides together. Then sew it down and use your scissors to cut little snips at the edges of the stitch. Fold the pocket under the skirt and make an edge stitch. Repeat this for both fronts of the pockets.

Add the pocket bags

Turn over the front panel and lay out the pocket bags onto the pocket fronts. Pin the bags in place then head over to your sewing machine and sew them together. Once that’s done, overlock them for a nice finish. Then push in the pockets.

Skirt with lining

Step: Add the back panels

Lay your back panels onto the front panel, right sides together, and sew both edges. Repeat this for your lining, which is the same pattern as the skirt, but without the pockets. When both your skirt and lining are ready, open up both pieces and place them together, right sides facing each other. Then sew along the top and make an edge stitch.

Attach your zipper

Pin then sew your zipper on the open section in the back. Then bring back your lining and pin it to the back, over the zipper. Sew the edge of the lining to the edge of the skirt, and then your skirt will be complete and ready to wear!

That’s it! I love the way this skirt came out. It’s so cute and flattering and, of course, it has pockets! I really enjoyed making this skirt completely from scratch and am very much looking forward to wearing it out and about. The best part is that you can customize the skirt by choosing a fabric you love! I’m dying to see how all your skirts turn out, so be sure to leave me a picture in the comments section!
