Measure and cut the fabric

The first thing to do is lay out your fabric. Before you can start putting the skirt together, you are going to need two measurements. Start by measuring the widest part of your body which is usually around the waist. Add 2 inches to that measurement for seam allowance.

Measure the length

The next measurement you will need is the length. Start at the belly button and find the point where you want the skirt to end. Once you have your desired length add 3 inches to it for seam allowance.

Mark on an angle

To get the nice, flowing style for this skirt it needs to be bias cut. This means that when you mark your measurement on the fabric, do it at a 45-degree angle.

Cut on the angle

Once you have the width and length marked on the fabric, go ahead and cut it out. You should end up with a nice rectangle.

Sew the side seam

Fold your fabric so that it is right sides facing together and get ready to sew the side seam. In this step, you will sew from the top of the skirt towards the bottom and stop sewing where you want to slit to begin. It’s probably worth measuring on yourself so that you know how big to make the slit. When sewing, leave at least half an inch at the edge.

Overlap the ends

Attach the elastic waistband

The easiest way to measure the elastic is by wrapping it around your waist overlapping the ends by about an inch.

Sew a bias skirt

Once you have cut the elastic to size, you need to sew the overlap which I suggest doing with a zig-zag stitch.

Pin the elastic to the skirt

Find the seam on the skirt and pin the elastic to it on the wrong side. Stretch out the waistband to find the other halfway point on the skirt and elastic and pin that in place.

Sew on the elastic

If you have an overlocker this would be the time to use it! Otherwise, zig-zag stitch across the edge to attach the elastic to the skirt.

Sew a silk bias skirt

Turn the skirt right side out and fold in the top. Then to hold that fold in place and give the waistband a clean finish, stitch in the ditch along both seams you sewed on the waistband.

Sew a hemline

Sew the bottom hemline

For the final step, double fold the edges of the slit and bottom of the skirt and pin the folds in place. You will want to start sewing at the top of the slit and work all the way around to the other side of the slit. To keep things secure, backstitch the top of the slit.
