It’s starting to get a little cold so I thought it was the perfect time to make a style tutorial about the perfect winter fashion accessory, the blanket scarf. Normally I’m not such a scarf person but I think they are so pretty and fun to work with so I really want to try and include them in my winter looks. As a small bonus, I decided to include a little blanket scarf DIY in this tutorial so not only do you learn how to style one, you can learn how to make one on your own.

How to wear a blanket scarf

Let the scarf flow

The first styling tip is an easy one! Why not just let the scarf hang loose around your neck? This is the perfect way to accessorize a plain winter outfit and add a pop of color and interest.

Wrap it around

Wrap the scarf around

If the weather is a little chillier, you can always wrap the scarf once around your neck. Not only does this warm you up but it looks super stylish as well. I love this style with my turtleneck sweater dress!

How to tie a blanket scarf

Tuck in the scarf

When it’s really cold and you have moved from a sweater dress to a full-on coat, you want your blanket scarf to keep you warm. If you are wearing a big coat or jacket, wrap the scarf tightly around your neck and then tie the ends so that you can easily tuck it into your coat.

Make an infinity scarf

Casual and cozy loungewear is so on-trend! When it comes to a more casual look, double knot the ends of the scarf to create your own infinity scarf. You can simply wear it hanging over your neck or double wrap it for a cozier look.

Wear it over your body

Wear the scarf as a shawl

This next look is probably the reason this scarf is known as a blanket scarf. Wear your scarf wrapped around you like a pashmina. Not only does it add color and texture to your outfit but it will definitely keep you warm in the winter.

How to fold a blanket scarf

Half wrap the scarf

This next style is one I like to wear with a sweater. Add a little bit of flair to your outfit by half wrapping the scarf so that the one end hangs in the front and the other at the back.

Choose fabric

Now for a quick, bonus DIY. Head over to any fabric store and pick out a plaid, flannel fabric.

Fray the edges

I bought 2 yards of flannel fabric for the scarf. I love the frayed edges look for a scarf so I went ahead and pulled the threads of the fabric to create frayed edges. If you want the fabric to be a little less wide, feel free to trim it.
