Cut along the seams

To kickstart this amazing DIY, cut the bag along the seams so that the material will be easier to work with.

Trace the flip flop

Trace the slipper soles

Place the sole of your flip flop on the bag material and cut around it adding some seam allowance. Repeat for the other flip flop. These will become the soles of your slippers.

Remove the neckband

Cut the sweater

Next, I cut off the neckline of the sweater.

Cut out the faux fur

Place the sole on the fur fabric and cut out the fabric.

Take a few measurements

Use a measuring tape to measure the circumference of your sole.

Cut a strip

Based on your measurement, cut out one long strip of faux fur fabric.

Measure your foot width

Next, measure the width of the top and bottom of your foot and the distance between those two points.

Draft a pattern

Make the slipper top

Transfer the measurements to a piece of paper drawing a trapezoid. Then curve the edges of the pattern.

Cut around the pattern

Cut out the pattern piece and then place it on the faux fur fabric. Then cut around the pattern piece adding some seam allowance. Cut out four faux fur pieces.

Assemble the slipper top

Create pairs, placing the pieces, right sides together, and sew along the shortest side.

Cut to fit your ankle

Cut the neckband from the sweater to fit around your ankle and sew it right sides together.

Turn out

You can then flip the small strip right side out using a safety pin.

Sandwich the neckband

Next, sandwich the piece of neckband in between the faux fur and sew it in by sewing the long side of the faux fur. You can use any elastic instead of the neckband.

Turn right sides out

Flip the pieces right sides out.

Add interfacing

You can also cut some heavy interfacing to give your slippers more shape. This time, you don’t need to add any seam allowance.

Sew across

Place the interfacing in the middle of the pieces and sew three straight lines across.

Add the strip around the slipper

Assemble the slippers

To assemble your new slipper, pin the middle part to the inner sole, and then attach the long strip all around these two pieces.

Attach the sole

Go ahead and attach the sole to the other side of the strip and turn it right sides out.

Insert the flip flop

Insert your flip flop into the slipper sole and if you have any cut-outs from the bag leftover, insert them as well.

Use fabric glue

Close up your slipper by using a little fabric glue and some clips. Make sure to put glue on the faux fur and then slightly fold the edge of the sole over, before you clip it, to keep the bottom neat and clean.

I can’t wear regular house shoes because one leg is shorter than the other. I have been wearing 2 different flip flops at home, one regular & one with a little heel to it. I’m going to have to try this so I can have something to wear in cold weather.

Thanks and have a blessed day,

    Joanna
