Cut the materials

To get started, you need to cut out 3 vinyl pieces. I cut mine 13 by 17 inches but feel free to make your pieces bigger or smaller according to what size you want your bag to be. Make sure to cut out vinyl strips for the straps. I cut mine 24 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.

Cut the fabric

The next step is to cut out your fabric piece. I cut mine 10 by 15 inches. I chose this gorgeous Ankara fabric but feel free to pick any fabric you like.

Sew a zig-zag stitch

Once all the cutting is done, sew a zig-zag stitch around all the edges of your fabric to keep it from fraying.

Sandwich the fabric

Sandwich the fabric

Next, place your fabric so that it is sandwiched between two pieces of vinyl. Press your hand over the vinyl to remove any air bubbles.

Clip in place

To keep the pieces in place, place clips, or sellotape on the vinyl pieces.

Sew a vinyl tote bag

Take it over to your sewing machine and sew the pieces together 2 inches from the edge of the fabric piece.

Leave the top open

Sew the third piece of vinyl

Next, place the third piece of vinyl over the sandwiched piece and sew it on, leaving the top unsewn as it is the opening for your tote bag.

Make a box base

Fold the corners of the bag to create a box-like base for the tote bag. Clip the folds in place and sew about 1.5 inches from the tip of the bag down the triangle.

Trim the excess

Cut out the excess vinyl sheet to make it easy to turn out the bag. Turning out the bag takes a little patience but it is so worth it for the end result!

Attach straps

Take your strap and fold it lengthwise. Then sew down the entire length of the strap.

Attach 3 inches from the edge

To attach the straps, position one end about 3 inches from the edge of the bag and sew it in place in a rectangular shape. Repeat this for the other side and the second strap.
