In this DIY I make a high-low poncho. I saw one of my favorite bands playing and the lead singer was wearing a high-low poncho. I felt totally inspired to remake it! It’s the type of piece that can be styled in so many different ways and is a great transitional piece as the weather gets cooler.

Tools and materials:

Sew the pieces together

To kick off this DIY I cut out all of the fabric pieces I would need. If you want additional instructions and images to get you started click here. I started by placing the right sides of the back pieces of the poncho together. I then pinned and sewed the center back seam.

Once I had sewn the back pieces together, I took the front piece and placed it over the back piece with the fabric pieces right sides together. I then pinned and sewed the shoulder and side seams all the way to the bottom. I tried on the poncho and decided I didn’t like the curve of the shoulder, so I unpicked the side seams and adjusted the curve.

Shorten the poncho

I then used a pin to mark my desired length for the front of the poncho.

Next, I folded the poncho so that the side seams were lined up in the center. I then marked an S shape from my front length marking to the back of my poncho, ensuring that the start and end of my S were at a 90-degree angle.

I then carefully cut along the S. I turned the poncho to the front so that I could check that I was happy with the length.

Hem the poncho

I hemmed the bottom of the poncho by folding the fabric over twice and sewing along the inner folded part. I did the same to neaten up the neckline. All that was left to do was press the poncho.

I love how simple it is to make such a versatile piece! I would love to hear how you would style this poncho! Let me know in the comments!
