Join me in making this DIY oversized turtleneck sweater. It is so fun, super simple, and totally worth it. Pair with some stylish boots or cute tights and rock these winter months!

Tools and materials:

  • A sweater - twice normal size
  • 1.5 meters crochet fabric (about 5 feet)
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk
  • Sewing machine
Measure oversized turtleneck on fabric

Measure your sweater

Place two pieces of fabric over each other with right sides touching. Then lay your sweater on the crochet fabric. Use a tape measure and some chalk to stencil out your measurements. Remember to measure out the length you want first!

Sew an oversized turtleneck sweater

Cut your fabric

Carefully cut out your sweater, leaving a ¼ inch seam allowance. Follow the shape and build of the sweater you placed for the top of the dress and then finish by cutting a straight line down to the bottom.

Pin along edges of the sweater

Pin and sew

Use pins to carefully secure the front and back pieces of the sweater. Once the sweater is secure, sew it together using a medium zig-zag stitch.

How to make an oversized turtleneck sweater

Get some sleeves!

Take the fabric and fold it in half so the right sides are touching. Now, cut out your sleeves. Next, pin the sleeves fronts, and backs together. Once secure, sew using a medium zig-zag stitch.

To attach your sleeves, turn them right side out and insert them into the sweater. Make sure all seams are aligned. Pin to secure and then sew with that same medium zig-zag stitch.

Fold neck in half

Finish that neckline

Measure your neckline and cut out some fabric for the turtleneck - remember to leave a ¼ inch seam. Take your fabric and form a tube by sewing it together using the same zig-zag stitch. Once that’s done align the seam of your neck and fold it into itself so the wrong sides are touching.

Align neck with seams

Turn the sweater inside out and insert the neck into the dress. Once all the seams are aligned pin the fabric in place and sew together.

Hand stitch the hem

Let’s hem the sweater

Take an unused piece of fabric, grab a needle, and begin pulling strings from the knitting. Now, insert the string into the needle and tie a knot at one end. Ensure your sweater is inside out and hand stitch the hemming using the pulled string.

Remember to only thread the needle through the inside layers of the sweater. Threading it through the raw edge and pulling through. Make sure to do this with both sleeves as well as the bottom hem of the sweater.

I love this idea! Now I need to find some purple crochet fabric :)

I did a similar thing but I crocheted the two pieces separately to avoid having to stabilize the raw edges. In the end I crocheted ribbed cuffs and hem. Takes longer but the end result is the same.
