For this DIY project, I recommend using a lightweight or medium weight knit fabric. Cut out your pattern pieces and let’s begin! To get the pattern for this dress click here.

Sew the belt

Belt

First, fold and sew your belts. Leave one side open so that you can turn them right side out. Once they are right side out, press them.

Take the end of the belt and pin it to the back left of the dress just under the waistline control point. Then sew the belt in place.

Shoulder and side seams

Next, pin the shoulder and side seams, right sides together.

Stabilize the shoulder seams

Stabilize the shoulder seams with a clear elastic and sew with a four-thread serger. Then go ahead and sew the side seams closed.

Then press the shoulder seams so that the seam faces back.

Serge the sides

Sleeves

Fold the sleeves in half and pin. Serge the sides together and then press the seams to face back.

Turn the sleeves

Turn the sleeves right side out and place them inside the dress. Match up the side seam of the sleeve with the side seam of the dress. Then match the center of the sleeve with the shoulder seam. Pin the sleeve onto the armhole and sew.

Then fold the neckline by half an inch inward, pin the fold, and press it in place.

After pressing, topstitch or use a double stitch to finish your neckline.

Pin on the belt

Belt

Then pin the second belt to the right side of the dress and sew it in place.

Serge all the edges

Hem

To get a nice, clean finish for the dress, serge all the edges of the dress. Then fold the sides of the dress by half an inch, pin the fold, and press. Then sew using a topstitch or double needle.

Finish the hem

Finish the hem in the same way or use a rolled seam on your serger.

Hem the sleeves

Then go ahead and hem the edges of your sleeves as well in the way you like best.

Sew on ribbons

Ties

To create the perfect fit for your new wrap dress, pin and sew ribbons to the inside.
