Tea Towel Tote Bag

I found the most darling kitchen towels at the store, but they were too cute to just dry dishes. So I decided to turn them into a sweet tote bag for shopping.

Here are the quick steps.

I started with two towels that were the same size. Part of the draw with these towels was the super fun trim they both had on the bottom, so I didn't have to add any myself.

I'm a HUGE fan of tea towels with trim. You can create pillows and placemats with them.

They make great aprons, too.

--> You can peek at one here.

To start, I put the towels down on the floor, pretty sides facing one another, folded the tops over, to make the bag slightly smaller and pinned them together, down the sides and across the bottom.

Then I stitched them up on those three sides using my machine. I left the top open.

Next, I flipped the bag, so the pretty sides were on the outside again.

My tote was cute enough at this point, but I decided to add some thin ribbons to the top with iron on tape...just for a little interest.

Finally, I chose two very wide, sturdy ribbons and stitched them onto the sides, to create a long handle. Easy and adorable.

With lots of room for shopping treasures.

If you also sew the two bottom corners across it will make a flat bottom. I then sew a cover and put it over some of that plastic net stuff cut to size to make a stable bottom. It's that plastic with lots of little square holes in it that comes in sheets. Back in the old days my grandma used to cover the cut sheets with yarn (cross stitch?) to make kleenex box covers. That stuff. 😜
