DIY facemask

Draft the pattern

To make the pattern for this breathable facemask, I folded a piece of paper in half. I then marked 3.2 inches from the bottom of the paper.

Draw a horizontal line

Then I drew a 5.2-inch horizontal line from that marking.

Draw a straight line

Next, I drew a line down to the bottom of the folded paper and then marked a point 1.2 inches from the bottom of that line. I also marked 1.4 inches from the bottom on the other side of the small rectangle.

Next, I marked 1.2 inches on the top line of the rectangle from the edge.

Write the measurements

I made sure to write the measurements on my pattern.

I then drew a diagonal line to connect the two points on each side of the corner of the rectangle.

Draw a curve

I then drew a second diagonal line connecting the top marking to the marking on the other side of the rectangle. Once I had drawn the line, I drew a curve under it connecting the two points.

I picked up a pair of scissors and cut out the pattern.

Cut the fabric

Cut the fabric

In the next step, I folded my piece of fabric over twice to make a smaller square. I placed the pattern on the fabric and cut it out so that I was left with two layers of fabric for the facemask.

Sew the fabric

I then folded the fabric so that it was right sides together and sewed the short, diagonal lines next to the curve.

Easy facemask

Add the ear loops

Next, I added the elastic ear loops to the facemask. I placed the two fabric layers, right sides together, and then put the elastic in between the layers with the loop facing inward.

Stitch around the facemask

I stitched around the edges of the mask, sewing the elastic pieces in place as I stitched. I made sure to leave a small gap in between the elastic ends on one short side so that I could turn the mask.

Close the gap

Turn and sew

I turned the mask and neatly sewed closed the small gap. While I was at it, I decided to topstitch around the whole mask.

What size paper did you use for the pattern. The measurments aren't adding up with a 8 1/2 x 11 piece. It would help if you used inches on the paper pattern picture. Very confusing.

Her #'s are cms. Maybe just use a metric ruler?
