I was checking out a couple of online shopping websites when I came across a super-cute skirt on Reformation. It was a little too pricey so rather than buy it, I decided to recreate it at home. This fashion DIY was so easy and now I have an amazing Reformation inspired skirt in my closet.

DIY mini skirt with slit

Cut out the front pieces

To start off this skirt DIY, I used a skirt I already owned as a pattern. I cut around it adding a generous amount of seam allowance.

Mark the slit

Mark the slit

I took my measuring tape and marked 6 inches which would be the seam where the split in the skirt would be. In retrospect, I think I could have gone in a little less, maybe around 5 inches.

Cut straight down

I pinned that line as a guide, grabbed my scissors, and cut straight down.

Use a pin to mark

Before sewing, I decided how long I wanted the skirt to be before reaching the slit. I marked that point with a pin.

Sew with a straight stitch

Sew the front pieces

Once I had everything pinned, I sewed with a straight stitch.

Cut the back pieces

I then used the same skirt as a pattern to make the two back pieces. I added a lot of seam allowance, as I cut because I would be adding a zipper.

Sew the front and back pieces

I pinned the two back pieces to the front of the skirt and sewed down each side with a straight stitch.

Hem the waist

Hem the skirt

Once the pieces were together I folded the waist over twice to make a hem. I sewed the fold in place and then pressed. You can press the folds before sewing if you prefer.

Hem the slit

Next, I moved on to hem the slit. I double folded the raw edge, sewed from the bottom up, and then moved across and hemmed the other side of the slit.

Hem the bottom

For the hem of the skirt, I used the same method as I did for the slit and sewed all across the bottom of the skirt.

Press the seams

Press the skirt

I then pressed all the seams and hems to get a professional finish for my new skirt.

Sew in a zipper

Attach an invisible zipper

Next, I added the invisible zipper to the skirt. Once the zipper was on, I finished the rest of the skirt and sewed the bottom closed with a straight stitch.

I am so excited about how this skirt turned out! This is definitely not going to be the last time I recreate something I find online. Let me know, in the comments, how you would style this skirt!
