How to Upcycle a $5 Men's Blazer Into a Trendy Two-Piece Set
After receiving some inspiration from an Instagram DM, I decided to try and upcycle an oversized men's blazer. I thrifted mine for $5, so don’t worry about running something that costs too much - there are so many great options out there.
So, with some caution thrown to the wind and without further ado, here is my oversized blazer upcycle.
Tools and materials:
- Oversized blazer
- Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Grommets
- Hammer
- Clasp
1. Prepare the blazer
In order to find your measurements, try the blazer on. Mark off your waist - which is where you will cut the blazer in half. Next, take the blazer off and pin it all the way around (to ensure the lining stays neat).
Grab some scissors and cut the blazer right above the pins. This will leave you with two halves; one for your top and the other for your skirt.
2. Adjust the skirt
Using a straight stitch, sew the top of the skirt to secure the lining. Next, turn the skirt inside out and put it on. With the buttons on the side and the pocket in the front, create a seam down the side to find the fit of the skirt.
3. Hem the skirt
Use an iron to flatten the seams before folding over the top of the skirt to create a hem. Simply fold the top over and secure it with pins. Next, use your iron to go over the fold and stitch the hem down.
4. Finish the skirt
First, you need to adjust the skirt to fit your waist - assuming it doesn’t fit already. If like me, your skirt was too loose by the waist, simply move the top button to make the waistline smaller.
Next, we are going to add lacing down the side of the skirt so the slit isn’t so high. Insert the grommets (I watched some YouTube tutorials to learn how) on either side of the slit and lace the ribbon through.
5. Make the blazer
Using the same method as the skirt (straight stitch, fold over, pin, iron down, and sew hem), I hemmed the bottom of the blazer.
To finish the blazer, all we have to do is attach a closing to the blazer. So, using the leftover fabric from the skirt, cut out two little slithers of fabric.
Next, fold each of the raw edges in, loop it through the clasp and fold it again to create a latch. Finally, we are going to add a tiny clasp on the inside of the blazer, to keep the sides from bunching.

I’m going, to be honest, I was pretty apprehensive about doing this upcycle. I was worried about the thick fabric of the blazer, but the iron seemed to sort that out pretty nicely.
