How to sew a DIY beret

Create your pattern

Grab a compass and a ruler. Find your center point and then draw a circle that has a radius of about 14.7 centimeters (or 5.7 inches). Next, take some scissors and cut the circle out to use in your pattern. Next, draw another circle from the same middle spot that is about 8.7 centimeters (or 3.4 inches) and fold the circle in half. Draw a line along the halfway crease and cut. Finally, cut the smaller circle out of one of the halves, and your pattern pieces are done!

Cut out your fabric

Pin your pattern pieces onto some fabric (I used some leftover black denim, but you can use any fabric you have leftover or you like). Follow the pattern and cut out your fabric on the fold so that you have one full circle and one hollowed-out circle. Repeat these steps with cotton for the lining.

Sew your hat together

Pin the pieces together all around (right sides together) and stitch them together using a straight stitch. Next, cut grooves all around the edge of the hat so that it will lay flat. Repeat both steps with your lining and turn your lining right side out.

Connect your lining

Place your lining piece inside your main piece so that they are right sides together. Make sure to align the seams and then pin them in place. Next, sew all around to connect the lining to the hat, but make sure to leave a small gap so that you will be able to turn your hat right side out later on.

Insert the elastic

Turn your hat right side out and go back in with another stitch about one centimeter (or half an inch) from the edge to create a tunnel. Next, take a piece of elastic and weave it through the tunnel until both ends meet. Once they meet, sew them together and secure them inside by sewing the opening closed.

Basic DIY beret

To finish the hat, take a small rectangular piece of fabric and fold it over onto itself a few times before folding it in half. Hand sew the bubble to the top of the beret and watch your hat take on a whole new life. I hope you guys enjoyed this basic DIY beret tutorial and will find fun ways to make it your own!
