Cut out your pants

Fold your sweatpants in half and lay them on top of your folded fabric. Use them as a guide for cutting out your fabric, leaving a quarter-inch seam allowance. Repeat this process again so that in the end you are left with four total pieces of fabric. Next, lay your pants together (align the seams) and sew the crotch seams right sides together.

Make your pants

After sewing the crotches together, you should have two identical pieces of fabric. Lay them together, right sides together, and align the edges. Pin down the outside and inside of each leg and then sew down the pinned areas. Once the edges are sewn, flip the pants inside out and try them on to make sure they fit.

How to sew a lounge set

Connect your elastic

Measure your elastic around your waist and then cut it to size. Make sure you are measuring the spot on your waist where you will have your pants sitting. Next, sew a zigzag stitch to connect the edges of the elastic.

Make your waistband

Lay your elastic onto your fabric and cut out a piece that is double the height and double the width of your waistband. To make it easier, simply mark off the areas that you’re cutting before you start. Next, lay the pieces of fabric on top of each other, line up the edges and sew each end. Then, take your fabric and fold it over the elastic. Pin the two seams on opposite sides of the elastic so that you can evenly distribute the fabric.

Fold and sew

Fold the fabric over the elastic and continue to pin all around. Be sure that you are pinning the two ends of the fabric together so that the elastic is securely inside. As you pin you should begin to see a scrunched waistband forming. Finally, sew two lines into the waistband. Simply, stretch out your fabric and guide the elastic through your sewing machine.

Attach the waistband

Flip your waistband upside down so that the raw edge is on top and place the waistband over your pants. Make sure it is even on the sides and then pin the waistband all the way around. Sew by the pinned area. Next, cut two small holes for the drawstring to go through. Attach a safety pin to the string and guide it through the waistband until it comes out the other side.

Hem the bottom

For the bottom of the pants, put a small piece of elastic onto your fabric and fold the bottom over. Next, sew the hem as normal to keep the elastic securely inside.

Cut out your fabric

Cut out the top

Place your tank top or sports bra onto your fabric and cut around it for your top piece. Like before, make sure your fabric is folded over so that you end up with two pieces, and remember to leave a seam allowance. For the top, what I chose to do was cut out half of it and then fold it in half to cut out the other side - making sure the sides were symmetrical.

Sew the top piece

Connect your top pieces

Place your top pieces right sides together and then sew the top and the sides. Next, do a rolled hem for the neckline and the armholes.

Sew the elastic

Repeat the waistband steps

Repeat the process we did for the waistband for the underbust area, so make sure to measure the size where you expect the elastic to fall. So, cut your two pieces of fabric, sew the sides, pin the fabric around the elastic and add the two seams. Finally, to finish the top, weave your drawstring through the elastic piece, place the elastic onto the top right sides together, pin, and sew the piece onto the shirt.

This DIY lounge set is super comfortable to wear and fairly simple to make. I love the scrunched look by the elastics and think that it gives the set a little extra detail. If you guys make your own, I’d love to see it! Remember to get creative with your colors and patterns and as usual, to enjoy!
