I know how basic and boring a flannel could feel, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have three of them in your closet. If you’re bored of the regular old shirts you have lying around, why not try and spice them up into something new. These ideas are great for giving new life to old pieces and basic thrift flips.

Tools and materials:

  • Plaid shirt
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Scissors
  • T-shirt
  • Rotary cutter
  • Ruler
  • Fabric glue
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Jeans
  • Sandpaper

Cut out the shoulders

Trace out the shoulder of the shirt with some tailor’s chalk and then use scissors to cut out where you’ve marked. Now, take the fabric that you’ve cut out and place it over the opposite shoulder (the one that is still whole). You are going to use the cut-out as a stencil for cutting out the second shoulder. Trace around the cut out with some tailor’s chalk and then cut out the fabric from the second shoulder.

Add some graphics

Take a graphic tee that you already own and like the design of. Next, use a ruler and some tailor’s chalk to trace out the design. Grab some rotary cutters and cut out what you traced. Now, place the cut out on the back of your plaid top and use some fabric glue to secure the edges.

Mix with a sweater

Grab a sweater you love and a plaid shirt that matches. Cut off the bottoms of the sleeves (from the elbows down) of the plaid shirt and slide them onto the sweater. Fold over the rough edges (by the elbow) and use some fabric glue to secure the sleeve in place. Repeat this all around the edge of the sleeve, by the cuff, and on the other side. Next, cut out the pocket and place it on the chest area of the sweater. Use some fabric glue to secure it and don’t worry about it functioning as a pocket.

How to thrift flip

Bejeweled and bedazzled

Grab some crystals and line them up across the shoulder seam of your plaid top. Add a couple of rows with some different colored jewels, glue them in place and rock the bedazzled style.

Rock some elbow patches

Start with a paper cutout of a heart. Place the paper by your elbow, slip a sweater on top and trace out the placement of the heart. Next, trace the paper heart onto some flannel material, fold it over and cut it out. You should have two plaid hearts. Hand sew the patches to your elbows and enjoy!

Patch up those jeans

Grab a pair of jeans, cut a line by the knee, and use a pair of scissors to distress the edges. Next, grab some sandpaper and continue distressing the edges until they are fraying. Repeat this a couple more times and then turn the jeans inside out. Now, place fabric glue around the holes and cut out small plaid patches. Press the patches into the fabric to finish!

I hope these DIY thrift flips give you guys some inspiration on what to do with plaid shirts and fabrics. I love the way these projects looked finished and can’t wait to see what amazing innovations you all come up with.
