Washi Dress Kit Review

Some time ago I ordered the Washi Dress Pattern Kit from Craftsy. I I had had my eye on this Made by Rae pattern for some time. It’s super popular and cute but it’s normally $16. So when I saw the Washi Dress Kit which included the pattern and 3 1/2 yards of fabric for just under $27 I jumped on it. I also got free shipping by signing up for their email list before ordering. This kit is no longer available but you can still get the pattern here.

I know almost everyone and their sister have made this dress but maybe you haven’t so today I’m sharing my thoughts about it.

Sewability

Is it easy to sew? Yes! I thought it was very easy. The only part that really gave me pause was the shirring for the back. I had never used elastic thread before so this was new to me but it actually worked. The dress was easy and also not too time-consuming, which is nice.

Fabric

The fabric that came with the kit is Art Gallery’s Delicate. I feel like the kit was such a good value because it included 3 1/2 yards of fabric. I like the bright print. It feels a little more spring/summer to me but I feel like with a jean jacket and some brown boots it can transition to fall as well. I had plenty of fabric leftover and I even made my dress longer than the pattern specified. I’m fairly tall (5’9”) and I like my dresses to be a little longer than you usually find them.

Fit

I like the fit of the dress minus one issue. As is the pattern fits me a little weird in the bust. The empire waist should hit me just below the bust and this dress hits me about 2 inches higher than that. Next time I will adjust the bust by adding about 2 inches and I think it will result in a more flattering fit. Again, I’m kind of tall so maybe if you’re shorter this wouldn’t be an issue.

Overall I’m really pleased. I know I’m definitely going to use the pattern again. The exciting thing is that Rae has a bunch of variations on the pattern on her site like different sleeve and collar options which make it fun.

What do you think? Have you tried this pattern before?
