DIY ❤ Balaclava to Wear in Cold Weather
I saw a really neat balaclava with a heart-shaped cut-out for the face.
It was so different and feminine, I really wanted to make one for myself. So follow along and I’ll show you how.
Tools and materials:
- Stretch knitted fabric
- Scrap fabric
- Paper
- Pen
- Pearl string (optional)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
1. Make a tube
You need a strip of knitted fabric that wraps comfortably around your head and is long enough to cover your neck as well.
Join the fabric into a long tube.
Close one end into a curved shape.
2. Heart shape
Try the tube on and mark where the middle of your face is with a square of non-stretch fabric..
Draw a heart on a piece of paper and cut it out. It needs to be wide and long enough to cover the opening you want in the front of your balaclava.
Pin the heart template in the center of the fabric square and trace around it.
Sew the fabric square to the right side of the balaclava by sewing around the outline with a straight stitch.
3. Cut out the opening
Cut out the inside of the heart shape through all the layers, about half an inch (1.25 cm) inside the stitching line.
Snip all around the cut-out, being careful not to cut into the stitching line.
Push the fabric square inside the opening.
4. Top stitch
Pin and then top stitch it in place
5. Decorate
You can leave it as it is, or add a pearl or sequin trim around the edge of the cut-out.
