Shoulder pads have made a comeback, adding structure, elegance, and a touch of retro chic to modern fashion. These small yet mighty accessories can transform the silhouette of garments, elevating them to new heights of style. In this blog post, we'll dive into the art of sewing with shoulder pads, exploring their benefits, techniques for insertion, and creative ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe. Get ready to embrace shoulder pizzazz and take your sewing projects to the next level!

1) Choosing the Right Shoulder Pads:

Select shoulder pads that match the desired aesthetic and the garment's structure. Consider factors like thickness, size, and shape. Opt for lightweight pads for a subtle lift, while thicker pads can create more pronounced shaping and structure.

2) Insertion Techniques:

There are two primary methods for inserting shoulder pads: sewing them into the shoulder seam or attaching them to the garment using snaps or hook-and-loop tape. Choose the method that works best for your garment's design and construction.

If you prefer sewing the shoulder pads into the shoulder seam, sandwich them between the garment's shell and lining. Pin the pads in place, ensuring they align with your marked placement, and sew the shoulder seam as usual.

For removable shoulder pads, sew small snaps or hook-and-loop tape onto the shoulder seam of the garment and the corresponding location on the shoulder pads. This allows you to easily attach and detach the pads whenever desired.

3) Gradual Pad Tapering:

If you want a more natural shoulder slope, consider tapering the shoulder pads towards the outer edges. This subtle adjustment maintains structure while providing a softer, more organic look.

Luckily, these shoulder pads used for this top already included a slight taper, so I didn't need to do this step myself!

4) Marking Placement:

Using a washable fabric marker or tailor's chalk, mark the shoulder pad placement on both the garment's shell and lining, if applicable. This will guide you during the insertion process and ensure symmetry.

5) Confidence Boost:

Remember, shoulder pads can do wonders for your posture and confidence. When wearing garments with shoulder pads, stand tall and embrace the empowered and sophisticated silhouette they provide. You got this, Boss Babe!

Sewing with shoulder pads opens up a world of possibilities for enhancing the structure and style of your garments. By carefully selecting the right pads, mastering insertion techniques, and embracing your creativity, you can effortlessly incorporate shoulder pizzazz into your sewing projects.
