Quick, Fun, and Easy: DIY Hair Scrunchies
Scrunchies are no longer a thing of the past, and I am so excited to start making a few creative ones of my own. Find your favorite fabrics, use some leftover scraps, or just cut up any old clothing, because this tutorial will teach you how to sew hair scrunchies on your own!
Tools and materials:
- Fabric
- Elastic
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Scissors
Prepare your fabric
Cut out your fabric to fit the measurements pictured above and 6 inches of a wide elastic band (about ⅜ of an inch tall). Fold your fabric in half, right sides touching, and sew down the edges to connect them, leaving about ⅜ of an inch seam allowance.
Build the scrunchie
Lay your fabric down so that the seam is in the center and flatten it down. Next, fold over the top layer of the fabric on either end so that it meets in the center and then fold again. Take the bottom layer and bring it over the fold and place it against itself so that it is folded in half with the right sides together. Fold the corners in, pin the edges, mark off a one-centimeter gap and sew (everything other than the gap).
Insert the elastic
Once you’ve sewn the edges, use the gap to pull the scrunchie right side out. Now, attach a safety pin to the edge of the elastic and weave it through the scrunchie. Scrunch the fabric around the elastic and pin the two edges together where they meet. Hand sew the edges together and then sew the gap shut.
I love how easy these are to make and how they make such great use of leftover fabrics. I hope you enjoyed this hair scrunchie tutorial and will find a way to make them your own!
