Applying dry shampoo

1. Apply dry shampoo

Lift sections of your hair and apply dry shampoo at the roots. The idea is to soak up any excess oil before styling and give your hair a better texture.

2. Section off your hair

Use hair ties to make sections of your hair. Make a high bun with the top section.

Then make another section below this, gathering the hair until above your ears.

Then you’re left with this bottom section to start with.

3. Apply heat protectant

Spray heat protectant on the layer of hair you’re starting with. Then work the product through with your fingers.

4. Curl the first layer

If you’re wondering how to curl short hair with a flat iron, this is how you do it!

Once the iron is hot, grab a section and clamp it toward the root, curling it and then pulling it down the length of the section.

Now, twist that section around your finger.

Before letting it go, flat iron the end.

Continue with the next section of hair, but be sure to alternate directions.

That first curl went away from my face and this next curl should go toward my face.

Then repeat the wrapping around your finger followed by ironing the end.

Repeat this until you’ve curled this entire layer of hair.

5. Curl the 2nd layer

Let out the middle section of hair and repeat the flat iron curling process with 1” sections of hair.

Feel free to use larger sections of hair if you want softer, subtler curls.

You’ll get the hang of curling with a flat iron with practice.

As you can see, I’m holding my wrist in a different way with each section to make it easier, depending on where you’re reaching.

6. Curl the top section

Let out the top section of hair and rub out the dry shampoo.

Then continue with the same, alternating curl process with your flat iron.

7. Loosen the curls

Once you’re done curling all sections, run your fingers through your hair to loosen them for that messy, beachy look.

8. Apply finishing spray

Apply a dry finishing spray to your beachy curls.

This type of spray does not have any hold to it. The key here is just to give your hair texture.

Lift up the hair to reach more of the layers.

9. Apply hairspray

Apply regular hairspray to lock these beachy waves in place.
