How to Sew a Ring Scarf
Sometimes in between larger projects, I like to do small, simple projects to use up scraps. This is one of those projects. I like to call it the ring scarf because it features a little fabric ring that allows you to style the scarf in various ways. This scarf will be a refreshing addition to your wardrobe. The ring scarf can be styled in lots of different ways so it’s a great piece to have.
Tools and materials:
- Lightweight fabric
- Ruler
- Pencil/fabric marker
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Fabric clips
Measure and cut
Start with your 30x15inch (76x38cm) rectangle for the scarf. Fold it in half lengthways, good sides facing each other. Cut one corner diagonally, measuring 5 inches (13cm) from the open end. Proceed to cut the fabric.
Sew the ring
Next, cut your 4x4inch (10x10cm) square for the ring. Fold it in half, good sides facing each other, and sew along the long edge. Open the seam and press down. Then turn it right-side out and press down again. Fold in half to meet the raw edges together and baste. This little piece will play a big role in your ring scarf.
Pin the ring
Clip the ring on the center of the short edge of the scarf.
Sew the edges
Fold the scarf in half again and clip all of the edges down. You’ll need to leave some space for there to be an opening - mark this with a pencil or fabric men. Proceed to sew along the edges, leaving the opening.
Sew up the opening
Clip the corners of the scarf to reduce bulk. Then turn the scarf right side out and give it a good press. Edgestitch the opening (you can also hand stitch the opening using a ladder stitch).
You now have one super easy and wonderful scarf. The little square ring allows you to style it in lots of different ways. Feel free to play around with different lengths, widths, and materials. So next time you have a spare scrap of material from a project, and you’re not sure what to do it with, why not add another ring scarf to your collection.
Enjoyed the project?
