Not all the sewing hacks you’ll see work as well as you might think.

One thing beginner sewists might struggle with is how to sew bulky seams, for example on denim.

I’ve seen several ideas for fixing that, but none as simple and as guaranteed to work as this one.

Best lightweight sewing machine!

If you're looking to get started sewing this is the lightweight starter sewing machine that Amazon reviewers swear by!

1. Don’t do this!

Do you remember the tip that said that this black button would help you sew a bulky seam?

Well don’t waste your time because that’s not what it does.

2. Presser foot

Raise your presser foot to the highest position.

3. Fabric

Grab some soft scrap fabric and fold it so it’s about the same height as your bulky seam or a bit higher.

Sewing

This piece might look as if it’s going to be too thick, but remember that fabric compresses when you put weight on it.

The softer the fabric, the more it will flatten down.

Sewing

4. Slide it

Working from the back of the presser foot, slide the folded edge of the fabric under the raised foot.

Sewing

Bring the fabric as far forward as you can without blocking the needle.

Lower your presser foot.

5. Sew

Now that your presser foot is level, start sewing as normal.

The foot can now do its job of pressing the fabric down.

Sewing

You only need the fabric to start your sewing off.

Other methods, such as using a button or sewing gauge have the risk that they’ll break and fly up into your face. Fabric is soft and will shape itself to the size you need it to be.
