A baby hem, also known as a rolled hem, is a narrow hem that’s 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) or at the most 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) wide.

It’s often used on lightweight fabrics where a deep hem would spoil the finish, or on baby clothes.

There are several ways to create a baby hem but, with my method, you don't need to buy any extra equipment.

Tools and materials:

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine

1. Straight line

I explain in my How To Sew book for beginners various ways to create a guideline for sewing but for now, use the guides on your foot plate.

Sew a line of straight stitches 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) from the edge of your fabric.

2. Trim

Trim the excess fabric to 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) with scissors or with a straight edge and cutting wheel if you prefer.

3. Press and roll

Finger press the edge to the wrong side along the stitch line.

Then roll the edge over one more time at the same width.

4. Stitch

With the right side uppermost, sew along the inner edge of the hem.

Use a guideline to help you keep the stitching straight and sew slowly and carefully.

If the edge of your fabric gets caught in the feed dogs, place a piece of tissue paper underneath it and pull it away afterwards.

You can use a rolled hem presser foot for this if you have one. I only believe in buying equipment that you’ll use frequently in your designs.

Thank you for the tissue paper idea,I save the paper from our holiday gift bags so now we have yet another way to reuse them! I am sewing very thin stretch wool jersey and have been going crazy trying to find a way to give it a handkerchief hem, thank you for the guidance, I will definitely try before ordering a rolled hem guide.
