Now that the weather is getting warmer, beach bags are becoming that much more important. Given this, I thought it could be a fun idea to teach you guys how to sew a DIY beach bag from some rugs.

Tools and materials:

  • Rag rugs (one or two)
  • Cloth belt
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors

How to make a DIY beach bag

Create the body

Lay your rugs flat and cut off any tags. Once that’s done, line up your rugs and pin them together (if you’re going for a smaller bag, take one rug and fold it in half). Now, sew the two rugs (or one rug) together, right sides together, by hand sewing the sides and cut off the sides with any excess fabric or detailing when you’re done.

Sew the corners

Stitch a diagonal line across each bottom corner (reference the image above) to keep the corners folded in. To keep this secure, make sure you go over it twice.

Attach your straps

Take your clock belt and trim off the metal piece on the edge. Next, cut the belt in half so that you’re left with two separate straps. Hand sew the straps in place (making sure that your thread matches the color of your bag to keep from the stitching showing). Repeat on the other side to finish.

For the final step, pack your bag with your favorite book, snack, and bathing suit and head to the beach!
