Painting Tutorial: DIY a Chic Emily in Paris Blazer Jacket and Beret
There is much outfit inspiration potential from the popular Netflix show, Emily in Paris. I’m sharing my own take on Parisian style with an infusion of art.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a DIY art-fashion painted blazer and beret. Let's get started!
Tools and materials:
- Oversized black blazer
- Fabric paints: Neon yellow and pink, black and white
- Paint brushes
- Puffy fabric paint: Purple, yellow, green
- A few paper cups
Above is the inspiration shot from Emily in Paris that we’ll be using to make our painted blazer.
1. Sketch a floral pattern
Let’s start out with an oversized, black blazer–an essential piece in French fashion. I’m using a more abstract design that I made for the rose print.
My goal is to create a “floral wave” across the jacket.
Start by sketching a rose pattern in white, fabric paint in a diagonal section across the front of the blazer. I’m just improvising here.
Add some directional strokes as well to add some abstract background.
2. Add in neon pink and yellow details
We’re going for a “Spring in Paris” vibe, so add in some bright pink to your floral design.
Touch up or add more white outlines as you see fit as well as touches of green for the leaves.
3. Add texture with puffy paints
Now, add in some random outlines with puffy paint in yellow, green and purple for some added interest.
4. Use the fabric paint pouring technique
Dilute some yellow and pink fabric paint with water in paper cups.
Then, splash those onto the blazer in small sections to up the abstract element of the DIY painted blazer.
Don’t be afraid to splash outside of the diagonal floral design. You can use your paintbrush to splatter the paint too.
5. Add finishing touches
Now, add in more puffy paint to bring out contrast in whatever areas you want.
I opted to add some splatters to the sleeves as well. It’s totally up to you!
Add in some puffy paint details to the sleeves as well.
6. Paint your beret
Now it’s time to make the DIY painted beret.
The fabric is more problematic to paint an intricate design, so I decided to simply paint on some text.
Using white fabric paint and a thin brush, paint on “La vie en Rose” (Life in pink) or any words that you’d like.
Add a pink heart to connect with the colors on the painted blazer.
