How to Create a Cute Curly and Messy Bun Hairstyle

Today, I’m going to show you how to make this big, curly messy bun.
You can start with straight hair, since I’ll show you how to curl it. Or, start with your natural curls. Let’s begin!
Tools and materials:
- Hair extensions
- Claw clip
- Brush
- Heat protectant spray
- Hair mousse
- ½” curling iron
- Hair elastic
- Bobby pin
1. Insert 2 hair extensions (optional)
If you have fine hair, like mine, you may want to add hair extensions for extra volume.
Start by separating the top section of your hair and clipping it out of the way with a claw clip.
Then, clip the hair extension in with the clips upside down, since you won’t see this part. It’s more comfortable this way.
Now add one more strip of extensions in the same way, a bit higher up on your head.
Then brush all of the hair to help blend the extensions in.
2. Apply heat protectant
Next, spray heat protectant onto your hair, focusing at first on the ends but then applying throughout the hair.
Brush it through as you go to distribute.
3. Apply mousse
Now, to add volume before curling, spray on mousse section by section on your roots. Then tease it into the hair with your fingers.
Next, add mousse to the lengths of your hair as well.
4. Curl your hair
Now that your hair is prepped, curl your hair with a small curling iron, about ½”.
Use a claw clip to section off your hair to make it easier to access the layers of your hair.
Finish curling all of your hair and let it cool.
Then carefully run your fingers through the curls to gently separate them for more volume and to make them look more natural.
5. Create the messy bun
Gather up all of the hair toward the top of your head.
Scrunch up the hair and pull it through the elastic.
Twist the elastic and then scrunch up the hair again, pulling the elastic over the hair one last time.
6. Add volume
Now, pull the bun on either side, making it as big as possible without allowing the hair to leave the elastic.
Actually, if some strands come undone, I kind of like the look of it a bit messy.
Now, hold the bun in place while tugging at the base of your hair to add volume there.
You can even pull a few strands out here and there to add to the messy look of the hairstyle.
7. Style your bangs
If you haven’t already, you can curl your bangs. Use a bobby pin to secure a small poof in the center if you like.
