This Halloween I’m going to be attending a party where you have to come dressed up as a Disney character, but the catch is that you can’t have the same outfit as anyone else.

So, I decided that I’m going to dress up as Emperor Kuzko. Most of you are probably thinking “who is Kuzco?” If you've never seen the Emperor's New Groove, go watch it now. It's my favorite childhood film. Let’s get started with the outfit!

Tools and materials:

  • Polo shirt
  • T-shirt
  • Marker pen
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Cardboard
  • Black wig
  • Blue earrings
  • Bobby pins
  • String
Marking breastplate on t-shirt

1. Cut out the breastplate

Put your yellow t-shirt on, and we’re going to create the collar that Kuzco wears on top of his red dress. Draw dots on the t-shirt where you’re going to cut, the bib comes down to about his breastplate.

Proceed to cut the bib out of the shirt. You also want to cut out a bit of material at the back of the t-shirt as well to make a bib.

2. Attach to the top

I’m going to use an XXXL polo shirt as my main dress that I’m going to wear as the base. You want to attach the bib to your red shirt.

I’m going to staple the bib on but if you have more time then you can sew it on as that will be more secure. You also want to draw lines on the bib as Kuzco has lines on his.

Creating the headpiece

3. Cut the headpiece

Next, cut out the headpiece which is in an arc sort of shape from some cardboard. Once done, cut out your head shape from the bottom of the cardboard.

Creating the headpiece

4. Cover with yellow fabric

Kuzco’s headpiece is yellow, so we’re going to use the yellow top to cover both sides. Place the cardboard inside the top, cover it on both sides and proceed to cut the material.

When done, use the stapler to attach the fabric to the cardboard cut-out. Use the stapler to make lines going down the headpiece, to copy the design of Kuzco’s one.

Trimming the wig

5. Trim the wig

If your black wig is too long, trim it so that it falls just below the shoulders. The fringe part should also come above the eyebrows.

6. Attach the headpiece to the wig

Then attach the headpiece to the wig using bobby pins. I slid the pins through the netting layer of the wig as well to make them extra secure.

T-shirt cinched in

7. Cinch the top in

I cinched in the red top as it was so huge. To do this, I just made a few holes in the back and then threaded some red string through them.

Blue pom pom earrings

8. Make the earrings

For the blue earrings, I just popped a pair of blue pom poms onto some gold hoop earrings.

Completed Emperor's New Groove Halloween costume

And here we have the finished DIY Emperor Kuzco look. This was a really easy outfit to make and I’m very happy with the finished result. If you’re looking for a Halloween costume that is a bit different from what everyone else will be wearing, maybe this is for you.
