Today, I'm going to show you how to apply mousse to curly hair. Mousse is great if you want a buildable hold for your curls. It’s versatile because you can apply a little less if you are going for a less voluminous, more natural look, or more for more volume.

Follow along to learn how to apply mousse to curly hair.

Tools and materials:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Defining cream or leave-in conditioner
  • Hair mousse
  • Towel
  • Sea salt hair spray (optional)
  • Diffuser hair dryer (optional)
Shampooing and conditioning hair

1. Prep your hair

Shampoo and condition your hair.

When you are rinsing out the conditioner, flip your hair over your head and rake the conditioner through your hair with your fingers to ensure you are removing all of the conditioner.

Using defining cream or leave-in conditioner

Then, apply a defining cream or leave-in conditioner to your hair. Mousse alone will not provide your curls with the moisture they need, so beginning with a cream or leave-in conditioner will give them that moisture.

Rake the defining cream or leave-in conditioner through your hair to make sure it’s well-distributed.

Scrunching hair to define curls

2. Bring back your curls

Once the defining cream or leave-in conditioner is in, you need to redefine your curls. You can use the praying-hands method to do this.

With your head bent forward, put your cupped praying hands under a section of hair and lift your hands to your head, gently scrunching up that section of hair as you raise your hands.

Release that section of hair and move to the next section, continuing until you have scrunched all of your hair.

Plopping hair in a towel

Then, wrap or “plop” your hair in a towel, on top of your head, for 15 to 30 minutes.

What does mousse do to curly hair?

3. Apply the mousse

Take about five pumps of hair mousse and rub it between your hands.

With your head leaning forward, blot the mousse onto your hair covering both the top and underside of your hair. You may need to rub your hands together a couple more times as you go to keep the mousse foamy.

How to use mousse for wavy hair

Once you have the mousse blotted throughout your hair, very gently scrunch your hair again. Be gentle, because if you are pulling it at all while you scrunch you will create fizz. Keep scrunching until you can longer see the white of the mousse in your hair.

Tilt your head to one side to check that you don’t have any hair stuck to your scalp. Ensuring your hair is all hanging freely will help with getting more volume.

Repeat the blotting and scrunching one more time on that side, then tilt your head to the other side and repeat the mousse application and scrunching on the other side.

Using a claw clip on the front section

4. One more volumizing trick

Now, tilt your head back and apply a small claw clip to the front center section of your hair, clipping it to the top of your head. This will help a lot with volume.

Drying curly hair

5. Dry your hair

Let your hair air dry until completely dry or dry it with a blow dryer using the diffuser attachment.

Applying sea salt spray for volume

6. A final volumizing trick

Apply a tiny bit of sea salt hair spray to your roots.

I had wavy natural curly hair with horrible frizz in humidity!!! I use to do the mousse thing but only that after shampoo and conditioner. But didn’t know about all the other tricks you do. My hair turned out really pretty but was on the stiff side. UGH. Thanks for awesome tutorial!!! Your hair is gorgeous! Thanks again
