Side-swept bangs

I’m starting with side-swept bangs, which are great if you don’t want to commit to a full fringe. Let’s jump right into it.

Scissors

The only thing you need to cut bangs is a pair of really sharp scissors.

Make sure they’re sharp and not blunt so you don’t damage your hair.

Sectioning bangs

1. Section your bangs

Section out your front bangs into a simple triangle parting, and clip the rest of your hair away.

I don’t want your bangs super thick or thin and wispy, so I parted it into a good medium.

Add more hair if you want thicker bangs or add less if you want thinner bangs.

Combing bangs

2. Comb your bangs

Comb your bangs nice and straight, and have them in the middle of your face.

Holding bangs

Hold them in the hand that you’ll use to cut your hair.

When you twist them, you’ll be moving them to the other hand so it’s important to start with your dominant hand.

Keep the hair down, and don’t elevate it, or you might end up with layers you don’t want.

Twisting bangs

3. Twist your bangs

Twist the bangs so they’re straight and your fingers are pointing toward your face.

Swapping hands

4. Replace your hand

Replace your dominant hand with your other hand.

Completing twist

5. Complete the twist

Complete the twist by twisting the hair back to the front. This is going to create bangs that angle nicely around the face.

Twisting hair

A common mistake is just twisting them like this which can create uneven bangs.

Trimming hair

6. Point-cut from the bottom

Starting with the length at the bridge of your nose, use your scissors to point-cut them.

Point-cutting means to cut up into the bangs rather than cutting straight across. This method will give you a softer, feathered edge.

Bring the hair away from your face without moving your fingers, and cut into them.

Bangs

7. Assess the length

Let the bangs go to see what you have. Mine are still too long, but I like the direction they’re going.

You can stop here if you want short side-bangs, but let’s do the twist method again.

Cutting hair

8. Cut a shorter length

Keep cutting your bangs until you’re happy with the length.

Cutting hair

To get more precision and control, part your bangs in half and cut them at an angle.

When cutting the other side, take a small section from the half you just cut to use as a guide.

Cutting hair

9. Even out your bangs

To make sure your bangs are even on both sides, comb them all to the middle so you can find any pieces that are too long.

Curling ends

10. Curl the ends

When you’re done cutting, use a flat iron to curl them under a little bit.

When you wash, dry, and blow-dry your bangs, they will naturally curl up more so use this tip to make sure you don’t cut them too short.
