In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make avocado oil. Avocado oil is most known for its hair growth properties, but the benefits of the oil are nearly endless.

It can repair the moisture barrier in your hair, prevent breakage, reduce dandruff, and can even protect your hair from environmental damage such as when you’re out in the harsh sun or even when you’re swimming in a pool.

If you want to know how to make avocado oil, keep reading and I’ll show how you can make this versatile oil right at home with things you probably already have in your kitchen.

Tools and materials:

  • Four ripe avocados
  • Glass bowl
  • Cheesecloth
  • Baking tray
  • Hand blender
Cutting the avocados in half

1. Cut the avocados

Cut all of the avocados in half.

Scooping the avocado flesh into a bowl

2. Scoop

Use a spoon to scoop the avocado out of its peel and place it in a bowl. Make sure to remove the pit as well, and don’t be afraid to scrape the sides for every last bit!

Mashing and breaking up the avocado

3. Break up

Now that our avocados are in the bowl, we’re going to need to blend them. To make it easier on our blender, take a spoon and break it up first.

Blending the avocado with a hand blender

4. Blend

Using a hand blender, mash up the rest of the avocado until there are no more clumps and it’s a very smooth texture.

Spreading the avocado on a baking tray

5. Spread evenly

Next, take your mashed avocado and spread it thinly and evenly on a baking tray. Make sure to get any avocado left on your hand blender as well as we’re going to want as much as we can for our oil.

Waiting for the avocado to brown

6. Let sit until brown

Let your avocado sit for a few hours. If you put it in the sun, it will speed up the process. The goal here is to let your avocado brown on the top.

Mixing the green and brown avocado

7. Mix

Mix up the brown top layer with the green layer beneath it and let it sit for another few hours with the same goal.

8. Let sit until brown

Return when it’s browned. This is what mine looks like after I let it sit overnight.

9. Wait or fry until black

Gather up your avocado like so. Now, there are two steps you can take. One, you can leave it until it’s brown/black OR you can put this in a pan and fry it until the avocado darkens. I chose to fry mine.

10. Squeeze the oil out

Whichever you choose, once it’s black, put it in a cheesecloth and squeeze out all of the oil into a glass bowl.

I recommend applying your DIY avocado oil on the scalp or directly on the hair while your hair is damp.

I typically like to apply after the hair has been washed and conditioned as the avocado oil will seal in the moisture.

Avocado oil is great to use on your hair as it’s rich in oleic acid and is high in fats that help penetrate into the hair shaft. It also works really well as a hot oil treatment.
