DIY Tassel Necklace

Creating handmade jewelry offers the opportunity to make beautiful pieces in the exact sizes and color pallets for all fashion statements. Using hemp cord twine from Hemptique is great because it comes in a huge variety of colors. For this DIY tassel necklace, I used neutral colors and beads so it would go with all of my autumn outfits. I can’t wait to share with you the steps to make one for yourself.

• Hemptique Hemp Cord (Use whatever color you love most!)
• Wooden Beads
• Scissors
• Piece of Cardboard
• Jewelry Wire
• Tassel Cap

Start by cutting and folding a piece of cardboard to wrap the twine around in order to make the tassel. This one is 3 inches wide. Note : The wider the cardboard is – the longer your tassel with come out to be.

Wrap the twine around the cardboard a bunch of times. The more you wrap it, the thicker it will be. I wrapped this one 40 times.

Step Two

Once the twine is wrapped, cut it off. Cut another piece of twine in the same color into an eight inch piece. Loop it under and one end of the cardboard and tie a knot around the bunch of wrapped twine.

Step Three

Use a 5 inch pieces of jewelry wire. Feed it through the tied piece

Step Four

Feed the wire through tassel cap, add beads and then bend the wire back into the bead to secure in place. If your wire is too long, cut it to make it fit tightly.

Step Five

Cut the bottom of the tassel to make the strands all individual and trim. Get the tassel wet and use fingers to flatten hemp cord. Let it dry completely. Make any additional trims necessary.

Step Six

Braid three piece of twine to make the necklace. This could be any length you like. Mine is 24 inches. To keep the braid neat, tie knots every five to six inches.

Step Seven

Thread the necklace through the wire to add the tassel. Create a closure by tying one side of the necklace over a bead and the other side knotting a loop to go over the bead.
