Try This DIY Easy Ruffle Skirt Tutorial to Make a Flouncy Summer Skirt

Why not add some flare to your outfits with this DIY easy ruffle skirt! In this DIY ruffle skirt tutorial, I will show you how to make this gorgeous DIY ruffle skirt from scratch. It’s super easy, and you also won’t need a ruffle skirt pattern - just your own measurements.
Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Paper
- Pen
- Elastic
- Safety pin
1. Take your measurements
Let’s start making the ruffle skirt pattern. Take your hip measurement and divide it by 2. Then, add 3 inches to that number - this will be for seam allowance. Then, cut two of the same pieces with these measurements.
These pieces will be for the top panel of the DIY ruffle skirt. I made mine around 12 inches long, but go ahead and measure your own desired length.
2. Sew the yoke
Now, sew the side seams with a lovely French seam, which is best because you won't have any fraying. To do this, lay both your panels wrong sides facing and sew the sides with a ¼ seam allowance.
Now, trim the sides by about ⅛ of an inch.
Turn the panel right sides out and stitch the sides with a one-inch seam allowance.
3. Make the ruffles
For the ruffle part of the DIY ruffle skirt, attach strips of fabric together by the ends using the same French seam method as above. The circumference was around three times more than that of the top panel.
To make the ruffles, sew a wide stitch on the top edge. Then, pull the string to gather the fabric and create a lovely ruffle effect.
Make sure to gather the fabric, so the length of the top edge matches the panel’s bottom edge.
5. Assemble the DIY ruffle skirt
Now, stitch the ruffled part to the top panel. Slide the top panel through the ruffle piece, align the side seams accordingly, and pin all around.
This is what it should look like.
6. Hem the skirt edges
Now, go ahead and hem the bottom of the DIY ruffle skirt, as shown.
7. Make the tunnel for the elastic waistband
Fold over the top part of the ruffle skirt and pin all around. I folded it twice for a sturdier fit.
Then, sew all around and leave a little opening to insert the elastic.
8. Insert the elastic
Using a safety pin as a guide, feed the elastic through the opening. To get a good measurement for the elastic, wrap some elastic around your waist and cut.
Now, sew the ends of the elastic and stitch the opening.
