How to Wear Boots and Dresses In The Spring

Wearing dresses in spring can be challenging to style – it’s not quite warm enough for open-toe shoes and sandals. Here are some great ways to style spring dresses (or skirts) with boots!

Do you struggle to dress warm enough in the spring? While the weather change makes me crave florals, dresses, and lighter colors, I’m still not quite ready to reach for sandals and open heels. I’ve put together some great ways to wear spring dresses with boots.

Here’s a quick overview of tips for wearing boots and dresses (or skirts)

  1. Add socks to soften a harsh boot line with bare legs
  2. Try sheer tights for a less bottom heavy outfit
  3. Tall boots are great with shorter dresses
  4. Add a belt or jacket to balance dark boots
  5. Try lighter colored boots with longer dresses
  6. Wear lighter colored boots with lighter colored dresses

Here are these principles in action

1. Add socks to soften a harsh boot line with bare legs

When you’re wearing boots with bare legs, and the color of the boots is a major contrast to the color of your skin, a pair of boot socks can soften the harsh line between your boot and leg. With these black boots, I chose a gray sock so it doesn’t stand out too much, but it does soften that line.

If you have darker skin and you’re wearing lighter boots, maybe try a brown or gray sock to soften the line.

2. Try sheer tights for a less bottom heavy outfit

If you need to keep your legs warmer and want to wear tights, try a pair of sheer tights instead of opaque tights to give yourself a little less bottom heavy look with lighter spring colors on top.

Some tights are made to look sheer, but they’re actually fleece lined, so that could be a good option if you need extra warmth!

3. Tall boots are great with shorter dresses

Tall boots can certainly work with longer dresses, but I prefer shorter dresses with taller boots. I think it balances the outfit nicely!

And of course you can fill the leg gap with some tights if it’s cold!

4. Add a belt or jacket to balance dark boots

If you’re wearing a lighter colored dress or skirt, but want to wear dark boots, try adding a dark jacket or a dark belt to balance the darker shoes. This will help them make sense in the outfit!

5. Try lighter colored boots with longer dresses

If you’re wearing a very long dress in the spring, try a lighter colored boot so the outfit doesn’t feel bottom heavy. A chunky black or brown boot would feel too heavy peeking out of a long dress like these. Also a boot with a slight block heel and an elongated toe shape helps keep the shoe from feeling too heavy with a long dress.

6. Wear lighter colored boots with lighter colored dresses

This may be a no-brainer, but when you’re wearing lighter colored dresses, choose a lighter colored shoe. A black shoe with a flowy floral dress can just feel too heavy! Or a white dress with a dark clunky shoe can be too much.
