4 Popular Ways of How to Style a Sweater

There are so many ways for how to style a sweater. Yet I wanted to choose 4 popular ones that may help you get out of a rut with the way you wear your sweaters.

This sweater was a recent purchase during a project with a couple of girlfriends. We all bought the same sweater from Target and styled it differently to showcase on Instagram. This sweater is interesting because 50% is recycled polyester.

BTW, there is another fun way to style this same sweater with a tip of how to shorten the sweater too.

Add a Collared Blouse Under It

For some reason, I rarely wear a crew neck sweater without another top under it. In the past I would have only layered a solid color blouse under this sweater, but this is the perfect time to experiment with print mixing since there’s very little of the prints shown together. In fact, I wonder how many of you even noticed it at first?

Insider tip: If your sweater is tighter and you don’t like seeing the buttons, try this tip I showed how to camouflage it.

How to Style a Sweater Over your Shoulders

This style may remind you of the preppy days in the 80’s but it works wonderfully for anyone in the warmer regions. I like this better than wrapping the sweater around your waist, but that’s another idea. Or, I've seen them slung crossbody around one shoulder only on some mannequins lately.

Insider tip: To keep it in place, I did tuck the cuffs together. However, if that doesn’t work for you, a  hair elastic would be another tip.

Why is this style popular? This makes it easy to have with you when you go into stores or restaurants that are chilly, and you need the extra layer. And it also acts like an accessory, so you don’t have to fiddle with a necklace.

A Sweater Over a Dress

The trick of layering a crew neck sweater (or any kind of top) over a dress makes the dress appear like a skirt. The first time I discovered this idea was when we were first blogging.

When I first tried this sweater over the dress, I noticed the proportions were half and half. I don’t think it looked terrible, but I’m trying to be mindful of the 1/3 to 2/3 proportions. Therefore I included a couple of secrets in the photo below.

To shorten the dress, I belted it.

Sometimes that will shorten it enough, but in my case, I then pulled up some more of the fabric above the belt. My second trick is wearing a tee under the dress. This saves on washing your more delicate items (and the possibility of shrinking your sweater, LOL)

Insider tip: If you don’t want a ton of bulk with your layering tees, check out Halftees. They even come in 3/4 and long sleeve versions like I showcased here.

How to Style a Sweater Under a Vest

It was an “aha” moment when I though about layering OVER the sweater. Now that it’s in my head, I’ve used this trick many times, even wearing a vest over a cardigan.

A vest is such a great layering item for so many reasons. They do keep you warm, but not as warm as a jacket. And there are many modern varieties.

Insider tip: This vest was transformed from a jacket. I removed the sleeves and sewed up the hem around each sleeve. This can be done with many jackets!!
