Best shampoo and conditioner for colored hair!
Tools and materials:
- Moisturizing hair mask
- Color-safe shampoo and conditioner
- Protein treatment
- Whipped glaze
- Thermal protectant spray
- Dry shampoo
1. Prep your hair
Make sure that you prep your hair before getting your hair services done.
This means filling your hair with as much moisture as you can before bleaching/coloring/highlighting etc.
1-2 days before treatment, use a dense, moisturizing hair mask.
2. Alternate full/partial hair coloring
There are several techniques your hairdresser can use to make it seem like you have a head full of hair color.
You don’t need to get your roots done every 4-6 weeks like most people seem to do.
Instead, alternate between partials and fulls at each appointment. For example, only highlight the perimeter of your hair.
That way, when my hair is tied up, it looks like all of my hair is colored. In the long run, this will give you healthier hair.
3. Use color-safe shampoo and conditioner
What makes shampoo and conditioner color safe? Use products that are meant for colored hair!
They keep your hair cleaner for longer, which allows you to use them less, ultimately preserving the color.
I recommend choosing silicone, paraben and sulfate-free products.
4. Protein treatment
Coloring, and especially lightening your hair, pulls much of the proteins and keratin out.
Bring back these beneficial components with a protein treatment, which is more potent than a mask.
5. Haircuts
Chop those ends! Haircuts are actually so important in maintaining your hair color. The ends are older parts of your hair that tend to split.
Once this process begins, the split ends work their way up the hair shafts.
Once this outer layer, the cuticle, is open, the color leaves the hair.
6. Whipped glaze
Choose a glaze for either dark or light colored hair. Apply it to towel-dried hair, from roots to ends.
Then style your hair as you normally would. This product tones out the brassiness from colored hair and will make your color last for twice as long.
7. Avoid heat styling
Nothing dulls hair color faster than heat!
If you need to heat-style your hair regularly, opt for an air styler or blow dryer which are less invasive than other tools since they don’t apply direct heat to the hair shaft.
8. Thermal protection
Use a thermal protectant when you heat-style your hair.
This creates a coating that protects your hair from the heat. Many thermal protectants include UV protection against damage from sunlight.
9. Avoid direct sunlight
Protect colored hair from the sun by wearing a hat, scarf, hood, etc.
Just like with your skin, direct sunlight will damage unprotected hair.
The sun will lighten the color and bring out those unwanted, brassy tones.
10. Dry shampoo
Constantly shampooing your hair will dull out your color.
Try to stretch out your shower days by using dry shampoo when you start to feel the oils coming out.
Mist the dry shampoo directly at the root when the oil is produced.
